Final Draft of Digipak and Magazine Advert

From all of the feedback we received about the drafts of the digipaks and magazine adverts we decided to make some changes to which ideas we were going to use for the final ideas.

After all of the feedback we have received we have finally been able to make a decision on what our final digipak will include. We decided to include a filter across the album cover and the magazine advert as many other albums from the indie/dream pop genre have a multi-coloured filter applied over the top of heir images. This would then make sure that our ancillary tasks did fit in with our genre. We decided to make the background of the album black and plain so that the image with the rainbow filter applied would stand out and it will become the main focus of the cover. We then included a white font to contrast against the background which again would make sure that it was eye catching to the consumers. The font chosen is simplistic so that it fits within the genre as the music in the indie/dream pop genre is simple but effective. We also tried to replicate the London Grammar title as they over lap the Ms so we individually added the letters and made them over lap to follow the bands conventions. For the back we decided to centralise the tracklist so that it was the main attraction on the back of the cover. As the promotion of the band isn't a main thing within this genre we decided to follow this convention and included a small black and white image of 'London Grammar' so that it blended in with the background and therefore didn't take the attention away from the tracks. The copyright information also follows conventions by being spread out just under the tracks small so again the focus is on the tracks. The inside image is natural like the genre and we also included to filter to make it fit in more with the rest of the cover. We decided to keep the inside plain and simple as nobody really looks inside of the cover they just take the CD out and close it. Also, we didn't want the cover to become too packed with information as it then wouldn't follow conventions. The spine includes the band name in the middle so that it is the main attraction of it. The record labels are on their to follow conventions as well as the ones on the back of the album cover and the barcode.

For the magazine advert we decided to include the same filter to create brand identity across all of our products. For the main image we took a picture from something that relates to our music video and decided to use it as the main image. This is because it looks natural and simple and if you look at the image it looks like it is about love and that is continued throughout the songs within the album. So even though this image relates to our music video it also relates to the other songs on the album as they follow the same theme. The font used is the same as the one on the album cover so that it creates brand identity and the font can be related to the band. We made the band name big, bold and central so that it became the main information of the poster. We then made the album name quite big but put it to the corner of the poster at the bottom which took the attention away from it and the same with the 'out now' so that the attention wasn't taken away from the main image or the band name but the writing is still clear and obvious for everyone to see. We decided to included an image of the album cover so that it gets extra promotion and it is clear what the album looks like.

Ancillaries Editing Updates

Within this prezi we have included everything that we put onto the album cover and magazine advert and explained why we have used them. Throughout there are images to show the progression of the products.

Ancillaries Feedback

We showed our final designs of our ancillaries to the rest of the class to get their feedback. They all said that they liked the filter that we applied on the images as it suits our genre. The images used were said to be suited to our genre and they also said that they looked very professional. The fact that we included the album cover on our promotional poster was said to be good as it promoted it more. We also had brand identity throughout the pieces which was liked as well. The inside of the CD cover was liked as the image looked effective and very nice which made it fit with the genre of the music video. Even though the back cover was very simple it was said to be very effective with the font placement. They liked the fonts on the album cover as it suited the genre and the colours stood out on the black background. They also like the name of the album now that we moved it to a better position. The band name placement was also liked as it is big and bold and therefore easy for everyone to see. However, we received a few criticisms of the ancillaries. They said that we could include a little bit more detail on the poster so we might included a website or the record label to it. The LG on the spine was thought to be a little bit too big but as it is the band name we have decided that it should be big and eye catching so we are going to keep it the same. The font on the album cover and poster was different so we have changed it so that all of the font matches and it therefore creates more brand identity.

Digipak Feedback

We showed our digipak to our target audience to gather their opinions on our design.

We got a lot of positive feedback about our digipak. Majority of people said that it looked very professional and the font and images are suitable for our genre. They also liked the look of the photo as they said that it was creative by including the filter. The font position on the front cover and the back are suitable for our genre too. However, they said to make the legal information bigger and potentially move the barcode to fit with the genre but it is all ready in the right position to fit conventions so we have decided to keep it where it is. The spinal font was considered to look rather stretched so we had to just change that. They also said the position of title was wrong so we decided to move it under the band name.

Ancillary Tasks: First Draft Feedback

Today we showed our media group our ideas four our ancillary task which includes the magazine advert, album cover and the inside of the album. This enabled us to get feedback on what fits with the genre of our artist and what will best fit with the style of song.

We found out that the majority of the class preferred the two people's silhouette for the back of the cover with the track list going down in between both of the faces. For the from they preferred the one that we already made but we think we might include the one with a close up on Milly's face and the black background so that they match and show brand identity. We then decided for the inside we would make it in colour and include a panorama of the woods. However, we aren't completely sure as we still like the one that we have already made and we also like the tree idea of having them sat against the trunk of the tree.
We think we need to go out and take more pictures that match these ideas and then decide from there as to which ones fit together best as we are stuck on which ideas we want to abandon and which ideas would fit together nicely to create some brand identity.

Conventions of Digipak and advert

I have looked at all of the generic conventions that are included on a magazine advert and a digipak to see what I need to include on one for my music video and what we can challenge to make it different.

Music Video Feedback 4

We showed what we thought was our final music video to the class (also happens to be our target audience). Many of the feedback said that they liked the time lapse that we included within our video at the very beginning, they said that they thought it help to add effect to the video and it also allowed the audience to tell if it is a dream or not. Everyone also said that they liked the overlay we have included on the shots because they add effect to the song and it makes it look cinematic. The storyline of the whole video is effective. The editing tempo was said to match to pace of the song and the lyrics. The monochrome colours used is effective in showing the audience that it is a dream and it adds effects to our music video. The editing was said to be effective generally and the lighting is effective and represented the genre well. The shots that people favoured was the swing dissolving to Milly alone as it was creative and effective, the dancing was also praised as it added a more cinematic feel to the video. The overall narrative of the video was said to be very effective and fitted in well with the genre especially the 'dream' concept. The video was said to have a professional finish to it making it look effective and cinematic.
However, some people said that the camera was a little shaky when we were filming the walking in the woods scenes. But we made this intentionally as it shows that when she is alone it shows she is unstable and needs Ben or love to help her become stable. We found that after the render the dancing scenes were a little too dark in some places so we are going to turn down the effect to make sure the audience is able to see what is going on. We also raised a question to the target audience to see if we needed to keep in the ending of the video make it look like it is a dream. But they said to take it out, so now we have decided to include the same time-lapse we included at the very start of the video but reverse it and have it going from black and white to colour to signify the waking up of the dream in the same way that it showed at the beginning it is going into a dream.
Overall, we are happy with our production after we change the darkness of the dancing and add a completely different ending into our video

Music Video Feedback 3

We showed our music video to one member of our target audience to see what they thought of our final product. He said that he loved the lyric and imagery match that we had throughout of our music video. He liked the sense of enigma due to the breakup that is happening throughout the music video. He also loved the use of monochrome as it add effects to the video and it portrays the emotion of the characters in the video. The slow pace of a few shots fit in with the slow pace of the song and he said it also helped to portray the emotion.
However, he didn't understand the shaky camera shots for example the hand held when she is walking through the woods alone. We used these shots to so that it shows she is weak and unstable alone. He also didn't understand the static vs tracking shots used on the dance. This was mainly to make the piece more cinematic and so it includes a range of different shots.

Music Video Feedback 2

We showed our music video which was nearly a finished production on Friday to get the opinions from our target audience of what they liked and disliked about it and what they think should be changed.
Many people said that they liked the concept of it going from colour to black and white then back to colour again as it makes it look unique. They also like the time lapse as this is where the colour then fades out. They also like the swing where it fades to Milly swinging alone as it signifies that the relationship is fading away. The driving images were said to match and be in time with the music which makes it appear to be more professional and the shots were said to look cinematic adding to the effect of the music video. The focus pull was liked by many too because it represents her feelings when she is left alone. The slow-mo of Freya dancing is liked as well because it represents Milly when she is alone but when she is with Ben the video is normal pace which also then reflects her mood.
However, they said that the music video appeared to be too dark in places which we can easily sort out by changing the contrast of the shots.

Music Video Feedback

Feedback

We showed the end of  music video which featured only a dance scene that was edited to the rest of the class in order to get some feedback of how to improve the music video and what they all like about it. They said that they thought it was very cinematic and it looked very professional. They also liked the overlay which we included because it made it so that there were two dancers on the screen. However, some thought that the scene was a little too dark and they didn't get the storyline as there was only that one shot for them to comment on. We have changed the lighting on the shot and made it a little bit lighter which means we took on board the criticism and made it so the target audience would approve.

Music Video Regulations

What is it?
Music video regulations are used to age rate videos that are appearing online and on smartphone apps. For example, Vevo and YouTub.

What is the system in the UK?
The record labels submit to the BBFC any music video by their artist that is going to be released online in the UK which they are expecting the receive at least a 12 rating. The BBFC then classifies each video, watching it through in its entirety and then assigning an age rating and bespoke content advice on the basis of the BBFC's published Classification Guidelines.  The sort of issues the BBFC considers in classifying music videos include:

  • drug misuse
  • dangerous behaviour presented as safe
  • bad language
  • sexual behaviour and nudity
  • threatening behaviour and violence

Any parts in your video that needs classifying?
Our music video doesn't contain any explicit use of drugs, bad language or sexual behaviour within it meaning that it wouldn't need to be rated so that we are able to put it online. This means that the rating of the video would be under a 12 making it available to all to watch online with no restrictions. This is going to allow us to have a wider audience as there wont be a band on people that can watch it.

Team Roles

Here we have discussed everyone's roles within the team and what they have to do to achieve the role. We have also discussed why the people chosen for the role are the most suitable ones to do that rather than someone else from the team.

Mise-en-scene

Within this prezi I have discussed all of the mise-en-scene elements we are going to include within our music video so that it is relatable to the target audience. We made these decisions through reviewing the target audience interviews and including the elements that they liked the most.

Casting and Auditions

Our idea is to cast two teenagers that are in a relationship as this will fit the target audience with them both being teenagers and it will make the whole video more realistic if they are able to act like a couple comfortably in front of a camera. With this in mind the initial people casted was Erina and Tom to play the parts. However, unfortunately Erina wasn't able to play the part so we had to look for a different couple. We then decided we were going to use Milly and Ben, this was because Milly is the same build as Erina and has the same eye and hair colour which fits what we actually wanted and Ben is with Milly so it made them look realistic together. Within some shots we include shots inside a car which means we would preferable need one of them to be driving (we had the boy in mind to drive), this was good as Ben can drive and it will make it possible for all the shots to be completed. They are both very confident which is what is needed for them to be filmed as it made sure that the shots looked realistic and not awkward. However, with having to change to filming Milly we will now face a difficulty in filming the dancing shots. We now have to cast an extra person to do the dancing which means we will have to change those shots slightly and instead of being able to see the figure we will now have to film just the shadow or have low key lighting so it can't be seen that they are different people.  For this we have decided to cast Freya as she is one of the only people we know that can dance (she reguarly wins competitions which means she is good) so she is the only person we know that is capable of doing these shots. She is also very confident with her dancing which means that she will be willing to do them for us without being awkward and making the dance moves look like someone who can't dance would do.
Below we have included videos of people we would have casted but they weren't good at acting. We have also included a clip of Milly dancing to show she wasn't suitable for the job and then one of Freya dancing showing she is what we need to make the video look as realistic and relatable as possible.

Member Profile

For our demographics of the target audience I have decided to interview Marta Lumbreras as she is a matches the variety of social classes, aged between 16-26 and she is white which is what our target audience is. For the gender she fits because the target audience gender was both sexes.

During the interview I asked Marta her opinions, attitudes and interests on relating subjects to media. Within this interview she discusses music, film, music video hobbies and an additional interests. This will then allow us to see what our target audience is into so we can make our music video the most suitable for them. We also them proposed our idea to her and she discussed what she likes and dislikes abut it in order for us to develop our ideas so that it is enjoyed by the attended audience.

Films
Marta enjoys to watch mainly romance films because she is able to relate to them and therefore she feels part of the film. This is useful because the theme of our music video is going to be about a relationship but more specifically a breaking down relationship. Which people of the target audience age and either gender will have experienced at one point in their lives which shows that they are not alone in the situation they have faced. Meaning that they will be able to connect to the video and it will therefore be more heartfelt.
She also enjoys films that leave you with a cliff-hanger and you then have to decide for yourself what the storyline will do. This again helps us because we have aspects in our music video that we want people to decided for themselves what has happened. For example, the fact that the music video is actually a dream, the audience has to work out for themselves that it is a dream and it will only be made clear to them at the end of the music video as it changes from black and white to colour. Also, as she gets a txt at the end the audience is then left to decided for their selves whether the relationship has actually ended or not.

Hobbies
Her hobbies includes doing dance, especially ballet or lyrical performances. This is useful for our song because it is something that she is able to perform to meaning that she is going to agree with our song choice as it is something again that she can relate to as she is likely to dance to it. Also, within our music video we looking at including a dance element into it, so we could cast Marta as the dancer as we know that she is able to dance which will allow our music video to look realistic and more heartfelt.

Interests
She doesn't have any particular interests except for dance. However, she does like to spend her free time relaxing at home. This helps us as it shows that our music choice is suitable for people within our target audience as she along within many other will enjoy spending time after college or work just relaxing. Meaning that we definitely have a sufficient audience for our film.

Internet
Marta enjoys to spend her time on YouTube watching music videos and dance videos. This is useful for us to know because when we put our music video on YouTube it shows that it is likely to get views from people of our target audience. However, this way it won't only be available to our target audience but to everyone else as well which therefore means that we are likely to acquire a wider target audience as it is available publically to all.

Music
Marta enjoys relaxing music as she enjoys to spend her free time at home relaxing, she suggests that she is into alternative music. This is because it is calm and she is able to listen to it as background music. Although our genres isn't solely alternative this is helpful to us as the song we have chosen, Nightcall has a relaxing element about it. However, as the song progresses it turns a bit more upbeat which I suitable for the male target audience of the same age. But the music video is quite sad so it turns the mood of the song down making it more suitable for the female side of the target audience than the males.

Music Videos
She enjoys videos with a dance aspect to the music video as it is something that she enjoys doing. She also likes videos with a narrative concept as she is able to follow along with the story and it makes it even better if she is able to relate to the story as well. Meaning that our music video is something she is likely to enjoy as our music video is about a relationship which is falling apart and almost everyone of our target audience age is likely to be able to relate to. As well as in films she also likes it when you have to decide for yourself the plot of the video. This is again fitting for our music video idea because of our decision to have dream vs reality presented within the video. Also, the fact that the audience has to decide what has happened to the relationship. She also likes it when music videos match the song lyrics as it gives it a better storyline and it is easier for the audience to follow along. She likes it when music videos are based outside and have natural looking costumes on because it shows that the elements in the video is natural and it makes the videos look more realistic. As the majority of our music video is going to include outside locations then it is again suitable for our target audience. She likes more natural lighting in music videos because it is easier to see what is going on. However, we have still decided to use low key lighting in our music video as we feel as it would best fit the mood of our song with it being sad.

Thoughts on Our Idea
She likes the contrast between the back and white and colour within the music video as it shows the good and bad parts of the relationship. She also likes the dream concept as it sort of connotes that everything good goes bad at one point and life is better when it is just a dream. She also likes the consideration of our target audience as we have chosen an element that is relatable for them and majority of them will have experienced it at one point of their lives meaning this video may help them understand the situation a little bit better. She also likes the dance aspect as it shows that the relationship to begin with is pretty but as it progresses it shows the relationship falling apart. She also likes the unique camera shots we are going to include within the music video as some of them will follow typical conventions of our genre but other will challenge them making the video unique.
However, she dislikes the fact that the boy is never actually shown because it stops her from imagining the storyline as much as she would if he was shown. This is because it isn't possible to explain his features within the video. She also hopes that she will be able to fully understand the storyline like we are expecting because if it isn't clear then the music video won't be as significant as we plan and we will lose a lot of the target audiences viewing
Her expectations of the video include being able to follow the storyline and working out what happens to the relationship after the video. She also expects to see the good and bad things within a relationship as it will allow her to relate to the video.

Adaptions
In order to make our video most appealing for Marta we will adapt something's within the video. We will make sure that the boy is seen even if it is just once so that the target audience are able to identify who he is and they will be more involved within the story. We will make sure when putting the video together that the storyline is easy to follow along and the audience is able to tell that it is a dream. If it isn't clear from the colour change then we will put a blurred filter on the video as it will show that it isn't real life. Also, if the audience isn't able to tell that relationship is falling apart instead of the text saying "I'm sorry" we will change it and put "I'm sorry this isn't working..." to show that it is basically over.

Marketing
In order to acquire a big audience our album should be marketed in between the top chart countdown on music channels. This is because a lot of the younger people will want to keep up with what is in the charts so if it is marketed in the adverts in the middle of the chart then it is likely to be seen by many people within the target audience but also other people will be able to see it that isn't in the target audience. Therefore we are likely to gather a larger audience.

Conclusion
In conclusion, based on Marta's interests, hobbies and opinions our music video ideas are definitely fitting for our target audience because she agrees with majority of the aspects within our music video. The main reason being that they can all relate to the video and they are able to distinguish for themselves the meaning of the video for them. She also really likes the dream concept which suggests that many other people within the target audience would support this idea as well. This therefore suggests that we have chosen suitable idea that fits our target audience and we will be able to gather a wide target audience considering we have chosen to do a niche hybrid of genres.

Early Ideas and Group

I have chosen to work in a group with Rebecca Clarke, William Jackson and Josh Parker. This is because we all worked together on our AS film opening and we found that we worked well collectively.
We have chosen to make a music video to the song Nightcall by London Grammar, the genre of this song is Alternative. We made this decision because it is a song that gave us visual idea and we all enjoy this song. Also, it is by a band that isn't that well known which is known to be the best choice on song when making a music video.
We have discussed a lot of idea and come up with a few ideas we think that may be the final idea:

The Brief

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video:

a digipak for the album’s release;
a magazine advertisement for the digipak.
